WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME? And WHY ARE ALL THESE PHOTOGRAPHERS HERE?
As a Model, the most obvious question that you might ask at this point is the title of this page. I can stand here all day and ask you to attend my events, but without any return to your investment, you're not really going to take me seriously.
If I were going to mention the most important thing that you'll get from attending a New Faces Event, it would have to be Experience. The most important thing to a model's career is camera time. That's over and above the money, the pictures, and the friendships that you'll develop. Working in front of a camera during a deadline or for a demanding photographer will be a piece of cake after putting up with an enthusiastic group of amateur photographers yelling directions to you from 10 feet away. You'll quickly develop the skills necessary to learn which commands to ignore and which commands to perform.
The next most important thing is Pictures. The more serious you get about your modeling career, the more you'll realize that pictures for your portfolio are very expensive. They rank only second to your wardrobe and make-up. I guarantee that you will not spend one-penny at our event unless you really love the Hot Dog Wagon. After you've been to a couple of events, you will begin to receive prints from the photographers. I'm not going to lie and tell you that everyone will give you prints, but in most cases you will receive a very significant amount of prints for your time. I only request that you send a thank you card to the photographers who take the time to give you these prints. It's also reasonable to request enlargements for your portfolio and you should be prepared to pay "cost" price for them. These are not expensive and in most cases, the photographers will be happy to give them to you as long as you don't get greedy. You've entered your career at a great time; most photographers use digital cameras and printers and can do a print for you very cheaply.
Continuing on our list of important items, I come upon Friendships. You become acquainted with many models that have a great number of things in common with you. These girls can tell you about their adventures and misadventures and you'll learn many things without actually experiencing some of the bad parts of a career in modeling.
When I mention the next most important item, I always downplay it a bit. I don't believe that a model at this level should come to photo days only for the Money. Some models are so infatuated with winning money, that they assume if they don't win any money, they are bad models. This couldn't be farther from the truth. As you attend photo days over a period of time, you'll discover that little friendship circles are developed. Photographers like to work with their favorites and models like to be shot by their favorite photographers. As a sponsor, these little circles really cause a problem for me. I was counting ballots one day and noticed that one model was really adding up some impressive numbers. When I count votes, I do it by number only and I usually don't know the name of the model until I'm finished. After I had finished, I looked up her name and she wasn't even at the shoot. Her photographer friends had voted for her even though she was not there that day. What I'm really trying to express is that you can make an impression on these photographers by being friendly and outgoing and when that happens, the money will come your way. We can only pay so many models prize money. Take the money with a grain of salt and walk away from each photo day listing all the things you've learned that day. That will make a winner out of you. Think about that $2000.00 that you saved by not going to Modeling School.
The photographers who attend these events come from all walks of life; Doctors, Lawyers, Plumbers, Cops & Robbers. In most cases, if any one of us approached a modeling agency to hire a model, we would be laughed at. No Portfolio, No Model. They attend a photo day to get the same experience that you are looking for. Be Gentle and work together, you'll both benefit in ways you'll never imagine.
